A boat trip is a good way to see Lake Skadar’s reed channels, open water and island monasteries. The main choice is where to start and how much of the lake you want to cover. A two-hour sightseeing cruise, a trip to Kom Monastery and a specialist birdwatching outing can follow quite different routes.
For a first visit, we suggest starting with a two- or three-hour boat trip from Virpazar, leaving time for lunch afterwards. If the winding river around Rijeka Crnojevića is the main reason you want to visit, look at departures there instead.
This guide covers boat trips on the Montenegrin side of Lake Skadar, including how to compare tours, what to budget and how to fit the lake into your holiday.
Where is Lake Skadar?
Lake Skadar lies between Montenegro and Albania, inland from Montenegro’s Adriatic coast. You may also see it called Skadar Lake, Skadarsko jezero or Lake Shkodër.
The Montenegrin national park includes wetlands, fishing villages and islands. A visit can be as simple as a boat trip and lunch, or you can stay nearby and spend more time exploring the lake region. Choose a departure point before arranging transport: the lake is too large for a general map pin to tell you where to meet your boat.
Virpazar or Rijeka Crnojevića: where should you start?

Virpazar
Virpazar is a useful starting point for a first Lake Skadar visit. Operators offer shared sightseeing cruises, private boats and longer trips to monasteries. Several departures meet around the central bridge, so use the operator name and exact meeting point on your confirmation.
Choose Virpazar if you want to compare a range of tours or reach the village by train from Podgorica or Bar. Routes from here can include channels, views of Lesendro Fortress and areas of open lake. Check the itinerary rather than assuming every boat visits the same places.
Rijeka Crnojevića
Rijeka Crnojevića is a riverside settlement with boat trips along the winding Crnojevića River towards Lake Skadar. It is worth considering if you want to combine a river cruise with time by the old stone bridge and a visit to the Pavlova Strana viewpoint.
Ask how far a tour travels and whether it reaches the open lake. Local operator Galeb, for example, offers a one-hour route focused on the river’s meander as well as longer itineraries. A short river trip can suit your plans without covering the same water as a Virpazar cruise.
Our starting recommendation: choose Virpazar for a straightforward first boat excursion. Choose Rijeka Crnojevića if you particularly want the river scenery and can arrange transport there.
Which Lake Skadar boat trip should you choose?
| Type of trip | Who it may suit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Two-hour shared sightseeing cruise | First-time visitors wanting a manageable introduction. | Route, maximum group size, shade and park admission. |
| Three-hour trip to Kom Monastery | Visitors interested in a historic stop as well as the lake. | Time ashore, walking and steps, age restrictions and entrance charges. |
| Private boat trip | A family or group wanting the boat to themselves. | Total price for your party, route flexibility and any extra charges. |
| Birdwatching trip | Visitors whose main priority is wildlife or photography. | Guide expertise, seasonal advice and access to the planned areas. |
Duration alone does not tell you how much you will see. The departure point, boat speed and time spent at stops all affect the route. Ask which sights are passed from the water and which involve getting off the boat.
For most first-time visitors, a shared sightseeing trip is a sensible place to begin. Spend more on a private boat if having your own group aboard matters to you, rather than assuming it automatically includes a longer route.
Lake Skadar boat trip prices and national park admission
Compare the total cost for everyone travelling. Some prices are per person, while private boats may be quoted per hour or for the whole group. Check the booking summary with your actual party size.
As examples, Kingfisher’s published catalogue currently lists its two-hour shared wooden-boat tour at €22.15 per person and its three-hour shared Kom Monastery tour at €32.15. These are examples from one operator, not fixed prices across the lake. Check your dates and the latest inclusions before booking.
How much is the park entrance fee?
The national park authority’s price list currently gives Lake Skadar admission as €5 per person per day, including visits to the visitor centres in Vranjina and Virpazar.
Some boat operators include park admission in their price; others charge it separately. Confirm whether your ticket is supplied before buying another one. The park authority also provides an online ticket service and information about children’s exemptions.
For example, Kingfisher’s own Kom Monastery tour page currently lists both park admission and monastery entry as included. Check the inclusions for the specific booking you choose, as packages and sales channels can differ.
Budget separately for transport, parking and meals unless your excursion explicitly includes them. A boat ticket with a meeting point in Virpazar should not be treated as a transfer from your hotel.
Boat trips to compare
The following listings offer three different formats. Compare the current route and restrictions before choosing; none should be taken as a guarantee of particular wildlife sightings.

A two-hour sightseeing trip from Virpazar
The Virpazar Lake Skadar boat tour with wildlife and nature, operated by Boat Cruise Viktor, lists a two-hour excursion meeting beside the main bridge in Virpazar. It is an option to compare if you want a shorter outing and time for lunch afterwards.

A three-hour trip to Kom Monastery
This Lake Skadar boat trip to Kom Monastery, operated by Kingfisher, adds a visit ashore to the lake cruise. Check the walking requirements and participant restrictions, particularly if travelling with young children or anyone who finds steps difficult.

A private wooden-boat tour
Kingfisher’s private Lake Skadar wooden-boat tour is listed as a two-hour outing for your own group. Enter your full party size when comparing the cost, and ask about any route changes you would like before booking.
Although these listings appear under Podgorica on Viator, their stated meeting points are in Virpazar. Check the address in your confirmation and arrange your journey there.
How to get to Lake Skadar
By car
Set your destination to the departure village and then to the meeting point supplied by your operator. Ask where to park and how long to allow for walking to check-in. Parking advertised by one business should not be assumed to be included with another company’s tour.
If adding Rijeka Crnojevića or a viewpoint, plan the driving route separately from the boat trip. Leave time for smaller roads and stops rather than filling every spare hour with another booking.
By train to Virpazar
Virpazar is on the railway between Podgorica and Bar. Check services for your travel date using the Montenegro railway timetable, and confirm the return journey before choosing your boat departure.
The station is outside the village centre. Allow time to reach your meeting point, and check the walking route or arrange a pickup if you have luggage or need assistance. Leave a margin between the boat’s return and your train.
As a day trip from Kotor or Budva
If staying on the coast, allow a full day for the journey, a boat trip and lunch. A tour with transport can simplify the planning, but compare the time actually spent on the lake and whether the boat fare and park ticket are included.
For a short stay in Kotor, consider whether an inland day trip fits your schedule. Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks are an alternative if you would rather spend that day around the bay.
What else can you do around Lake Skadar?
Visit Pavlova Strana
Pavlova Strana is the elevated viewpoint overlooking the Crnojevića River’s bend. It is a separate stop on land. A boat travelling through the meander gives you a view from water level, rather than the high panorama seen in photographs.
The national tourism organisation’s Rijeka Crnojevića guide includes the viewpoint and town. If booking an excursion, check whether “Pavlova Strana” means a stop at the viewpoint or a boat route beneath it.
Go birdwatching
Lake Skadar supports species including Dalmatian pelicans and cormorants. If seeing birds is your main reason for visiting, speak to a specialist guide about timing and routes. Bring binoculars if you have them, and keep your distance from birds and nesting areas.
A general sightseeing cruise may include wildlife watching, but sightings depend on the day. Choose a birdwatching outing for the guide and approach, rather than a promise of seeing a particular species.
Try kayaking or stay for lunch
Kayaks can be hired around Virpazar and at the Vranjina visitor centre. Ask for a route suited to your experience and the day’s conditions, including where you are permitted to paddle.
You can also leave the afternoon free for lunch or a local winery visit. Arrange any tasting in advance and plan transport if you intend to drink. Our Montenegro things to do guide has more ideas for the rest of your trip.

When to visit Lake Skadar
The right time depends on what you want from the trip. For summer sightseeing, look for a boat with shade and consider an earlier departure if you prefer to avoid walking around the village in the midday heat.
The national tourism organisation highlights autumn and winter for birdwatching. For a trip outside the main holiday season, confirm departures in advance and ask a guide what is realistic for your dates.
Water levels and weather can affect routes. If you are travelling for a particular monastery, channel or photographic view, ask whether it is likely to be accessible. Check the operator’s policy for weather changes before booking.
Where to stay near Lake Skadar
Consider a night or two near the lake if you want an early boat departure, more than one activity or time to explore beyond a day trip. For a visit centred on Virpazar, check accommodation in the village and surrounding area.
Look at the exact location before booking. A rural property may suit a stay with a car, while somewhere nearer the centre can be more convenient if you arrive by train. Ask about parking, breakfast times and access with luggage.
For help choosing between the lake, the coast and the mountains, see our guide to where to stay in Montenegro.
Before your boat trip
Bring drinking water, sun protection and a layer for cooler weather. Take swimwear and a towel if your itinerary offers a swimming stop, and suitable clothing if visiting a monastery.
Check boarding arrangements if you have limited mobility, and ask about shade and life jackets when travelling with children. Keep your booking confirmation handy so you can find the right operator among the departure points.
Follow the guide’s instructions around wildlife, take litter back with you and leave water lilies where they grow.
Lake Skadar boat trip questions
Is two hours enough?
Two hours is a sensible introduction if you want a sightseeing cruise alongside lunch in Virpazar. Choose a longer itinerary if a monastery visit or a particular part of the lake matters to you.
Do you need a car?
You can visit Virpazar by train from Podgorica or Bar, or book an excursion with transport. A car gives you more flexibility for other villages and viewpoints, but is not essential for a boat trip meeting in Virpazar.
Can you swim during a boat trip?
Some itineraries offer a swimming stop. Confirm it is part of your chosen trip, and follow the skipper’s advice about where and whether to enter the water. It may change with conditions.
Does a boat tour cross into Albania?
Do not assume so because the lake is shared by both countries. The tours described here are excursions from Montenegro. If you want a cross-border trip, ask specifically about the itinerary and arrangements.
